Sri Guru Granth Saib Ji

The Guru Granth Sahib (Punjabi: ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ, gurū grantha sāhiba) — Granth is Punjabi for book; Sahib is Hindi meaning master, from Arabic, meaning companion, friend, owner, or master. It is the religious holy scripture of the Sikh faith, but in actual fact, it is considered to be more than just a holy book. The Sikhs treat this Granth (holy book) as a living Guru. The holy text spans 1430 pages and contains the actual words spoken by the Sikh Gurus and various other Saints from other religions including Hinduism and Islam.
The Adi Granth is often used to refer to the Guru Granth Sahib. The Adi Granth only forms the portion of the Granth which Guru Arjan compiled in 1604. This term is often used interchangeably so it is important to note the context within which it is used.
The Granth was made a guru by the last of the living Sikh Masters, Guru Gobind Singh in 1708. Guru Gobind Singh said before his demise that the Sikhs were to treat the Granth as their next Guru:
Punjabi: ਸੱਬ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਕੋ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਾਨਯੋ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ
Transliteration: Sab sikhan kō hukam hai gurū mānyō granth
English: All Sikhs are commanded to take the Granth as Guru
When one visits a Sikh Temple or Gurdwara the Granth forms the main part of the Darbar Sahib or Main Hall. The Holy Book is placed on a raised platform and covered in finery. The platform is always covered by an ornate canopy. The original text of the Granth is written in the Gurmukhi script and contains many languages including Punjabi, Sanskrit and Persian.
The holy text comprises over 5000 Shabhads or hymns which are poetically constructed; and set to classical form of music rendition Ragas; can be set to predetermined musical Talas (rhythmic beats) and have a definite message for the whole of humanity.
Below an excerpt from page 15 of Guru Granth Sahib:
O Nanak, if I had hundreds of thousands of stacks of paper, and if I were to read and recite and embrace love for the Lord,
and if ink were never to fail me, and if my pen were able to move like the wind
-even so, I could not estimate Your Value. How can I describe the Greatness of Your Name? 42
This is what Max Arthur Macauliffe wrote about the authenticity of the Guru's teaching:
"The Sikh religion differs as regards the authenticity of its dogmas from most other theological systems. Many of the great teachers the world has known, have not left a line of their own composition and we only know what they taught through tradition or second-hand information. If Pythagoras wrote of his tenets, his writings have not descended to us. We know the teachings of Socrates only through the writings of Plato and Xenophanes. Buddha has left no written memorial of his teaching. Kungfu-tze, known to Europeans as Confucius, left no documents in which he detailed the principles of his moral and social system. The founder of Christianity did not reduce his doctrines to writing and for them we are obliged to trust to the gospels according to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The Arabian Prophet did not himself reduce to writing the chapters of the Qur'an; they were written or compiled by his adherents and followers. But the compositions of the Sikh Gurus are preserved and we know at first hand what they taught."

Update on SRS board meetingheld on 10/21/06

Dear Friends Guru Fateh !

As you all know there was a monthly board meeting which was held on October 21st 2006 at 9:30 AM at SRS premises.

We, Amarjit K Atwal, Jatinder S Grewal, Narinder PS Marwaha and Surinder K Sanhga requested 11 points to be included in the agenda.

As always in the official agenda provided to us by the management they did not include any of our requests. The meeting started with the financial statement summary read out loud by Finical Secretary when we requested the details of the expenses on the financial statement they refused to provide any details. Finical Secretary said "He does not have time for this nonsense" and he is not going to provide any details on any expenses and he was not willing to disclose any income source.

The current President and Treasurer have opened a secret Money Market Bank Account without any resolution in the SRS Board. The word secret is used as we as the majority of the board members don't have any knowledge of this account and resolution to open this account has not been brought or approved in the board. Majority of the board members and sangat are not aware of this Bank Account, how much money is in it, or what the source of this income is and even where the interest is going. When asked to provide the details on this account current office bearers refused to provide any details they said we do not want to provide any details on this account and they will not disclose anything about this to us or sangat. (We came to know that this account has been opened in last few months after elections.)

At this point the meeting was adjourned abruptly due to tension between the board members.

We as the elected board members felt this is our moral duty to bring this to your attention. We would greatly appreciate if you all can provide us with some feedback so that this mismanagement at SRS can be tackled in wise and professional way.

Thank You

Members Panthic Slate

11 Point Board meeting Agenda requested was as under :

We would like you to add the following topics to the meeting Agenda.

  1. Income details for current month ( previously we have never been shown the details of the income and we request that all and every income source is disclosed to us)
  2. All Expense details with receipts and check stubs should be explained to all the board members as this has never been done and we are being asked to sign the financial details which are not even shown to us.
  3. Manjit Singh Bains Member ship issue.
  4. Long Term Panning Committee's report and details on renovation of the bathroom wing as this wing is in very bad shape and required immediate attention along with old kitchen room.
  5. Details of all the bank accounts should be presented and explained to all the board members as it has been brought to our attention that Gurudwara Sahib has more than one Bank Account and most of the Board members are not aware of this.
  6. We need a full time Langree who can help in Langar hall and have meals ready every day.
  7. Bhai Mohindar Singh's Salary question which has been pending since last few meetings.
  8. SRS Membership and to AGPC.
  9. Daljit Singh Island Lake wala is holding a Keertan Darbar : How and when SRS going to tackle it.
  10. How can we overcome the need of modern SRS Library and meeting room.
  11. Missing reports from CIC and sub comities who and when are these committees going to report to the board.

Chicago Sikh community collects $24,000 US for Dr. Sekhon's election campaign

Chicago Oct. 22, 2006

GurSikh , US Army Colonel, Medical Doctor, Lawyer, Dr. Arjinderpal Singh Sekhon is running for Congress from California's 2nd Congressional District. He requested on Saturday October 21, 2006, “please do not do Ardas so that Dr. Sekhon may win, Do pray for Sarbat da bhala (well-being of human race) welfare of all; peace and prosperity for all. If my winning is going to help the human race God knows it and he will help me and if my opponent’s win as Congressman is going to help the human race then let God help my opponent. ” This speech was enough for all the Sikhs in Chicago area to come out and help their fellow brother. If elected Dr. Sekhon will be the first Turbaned sikh to enter US Congress.

(Dr. Sekhon with Chicago Sikh Sangat)

Members of the Sikh Religious Society organized a fund rising for Dr. Sekhon on Sunday October 23 rd 2006. S. Gurmit Singh introduced Dr. Sekhon to the Sikh Sangat and addressed the congregation. Dr. Sekhon was one of the Panj Piyara’s (Five beloved ones) for the first seva of the nishan sahib at Palatine Gurudwara sahib when it was first built.

Gurmit Singh from Detroit spoke of the importance of electing Dr. Sekhon to the US Congress and called for the support of our youth towards Dr. Sekhon. Dr. Sekhon emphasized on his education (having obtained a medical and law degree), as well as being highly decorated in the US Army. With that impressive background, he believes if elected for US Congress, he will be able to get across to the American public about what a SIKH AMERICAN is all about.

(Dr. Sekhon, Surinder Pal Singh Kalra, Gurmukh S Bhullar L to R)

The Sikh Sangat was so impressed by Dr. Sekhons words and personality that they came out with an open heart to support Dr. Arjinder Pal Singh Sekhon. The total collections exceeded $24,000.

We as organizers are very thankful to the Sikh community of Chicago who came out to help Dr. Sekhon financially and morally. We would also like to thank all the volunteers who came out to help raise money.

Once again, well done Chicago Sikh Sangat! This is the way to show how a Sikh community can stand behind our brothers and sisters in the need of hour.

(Dr. Sekhon, Gurmukh S Bhullar, Lakwinder Singh Sandhu & Onkar S Dhillon L to R)

If you have not contributed yet please contribute to help Dr. Sekhon Win his election as a Democatic Party nominee for US Congress from 2nd Distrcit in California

  • when it's a personal opinion, he will say it with humility
  • when it's guru's word, he will never take credit himself
  • when it needs to be said, he's not afraid to say it
  • when it is not worth saying, he stays peaceful and quiet
  • when you praise him, he won't praise back - he will be thankful to the guru
  • when you insult him, he won't insult back - he will be thankful to the guru
  • when you ask him for seva, he'll ask you for seva
  • when you ask him for a favour, he will eagerly listen
  • when you say something in line with gurmat, he will say sat bachan
  • when you say something he doesn't agree with, he may not agree but he will never put you down or make you feel lower
  • when you are confused, he will use guru's teachings to explain
  • when you understand, he will ask you to tell others
  • when he is alone, he will take any time he can to remember the guru
  • when he is with you, he will not push you, but inspire you to do the same
  • when you ask him for advice, he will first think of the guru's opinion

  • when you make a mistake, he will make himself look like the simpleton

  • but you'll not often see them - because he's looking at your feet
  • when you are just talking worldly things, he will make you feel normal, but he will never let the filth of maya rub off on himself,
  • when he talks to you about history, his eyes well up with tears,
  • but he doesn't live in the past, he remakes history, through his actions
  • when you want the honest truth, he won't sugar coat it

Meeting on Disrespect (Be adbi) of Siri Guru Granthi Sahib ji on October 21st 2006 at Palatine Gurudwara Sahib
The Guru Granth Sahib is truly unique among the world's great scriptures. The living Guru of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, is held in great reverence by Sikhs and treated with the utmost respect. The Gurudawa Sahib is the home of our living guru and a place where all Sikhs gather to listen to the order of the day. It’s our duty as Sikh's to pay our utmost respect to our Guru. All Sikhs are very closely bonded with Guru Granth Sahib Ji from where they get their direction of life and whom they respect as a living Guru.

You all will be very much surprised and disheartened to know that on October 21, 2006 at around 9:22 AM CST at Sikh Religious Society (SRS) Palatine Gurudwara Sahib , Guru Granth Sahib was Disrespected (Be adbi )
Details of Incident:
Myself, Jatinder Singh Grewal, went to the Gurudwara Sahib to attend a monthly board meeting and as per my routine I went upstairs to the devan hall to pay my respect to Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. When I went upstairs I was shocked and disheartened to see some kids from our local community sitting on the top of Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. They were literally sitting on the top of the PIRA Sahib, on the top of our holiest book with their feet. I immediately brought this incident to the Exective Secrtaty’s notice and we ( Sadhu Singh Rikhiraj, Narinder Pal Singh Marwaha and myself Jatinder Singh Grewal) all went upstairs and witnessed it, we made the kids get down. We all were disheartened and stunned by this act.
These kids were only 3 or 4 years old, we immediately went down stairs to have a talk with their parents. We all feel sorry that this has happened, but what are we going to do to make sure that this does not happen again? We all need to brainstorm and figure out why this has happened and how we can prevent this from happening again. Here question is not why did these kids do this, rather we should question parents as well as the management, Why did they let this happen?
I personally have few questions:
Why did the parents let their kids wonder around unattended?
Why did the management let this happen?
Where the Granthi’s were who are paid to perform services?

We all as a sangat are responsible for this action. We let these things pass by like nothing has happened. Why didn't we act smart to begin with by watching our own kids when they are in a public place? It’s the parents’ responsibility to look after their own kids and to know what they are doing and where they are, they should not be left unattended any point of time.
As management we should have better control over the place. A majority of the management people were present in the Gurudwara Sahib when this happened. Do we come to the gurudwara sahib to sit on our “ELECTED CHAIRS” or is it our job as management to make sure that our guru is safe at all times. If some unfortunate thing of this level happens when we, the board members, are present at the Gurudwara and we do not do anything to prevent this from happening in future would mean there is something seriously wrong with our system. Are we not capable of running this place and if someone is not capable of running this place than he or she should not be in the management place anymore. I am not pin pointing anyone, I am also an elected board of trustee, so called management person, so I take my responsibly of this act and I am willing to accept any religious punishment on this in accordance to Sikh Rehat maryada and I would request all others to come forward and seek a apology too.
I feel Granthi Sinhg’s are also responsible for this act. As a priest or Bhai Sahib or Granthi Singh what ever we call them, who is being paid from the Gurudwara Sahib to act as Bahi Sahib, then why is a Bhai Sahib not present in the devan hall? If we are shorthanded in staff then we need to hire someone, but there should be someone present in Guru’s hajoori when Guru is parkash.
We can play the blame game if we want. I feel its time to take action. We really need to come up with a solution and new ideas which can help us so that an indecent of this nature shall not occur in future. Please do provide us with your valuable ideas and support so that we can make sure our Guru is safe all the times. You can email us at thepanthic@gmail.com
A Special lecture session will also be arranged on this topic very shortly by Mrs. Amarjit Kaur Atwal.
On this topic we have arranged a community meeting at SRS premises at 12:00 PM CST on October 29th, 2006 in the Garage room in the (room across the library) Gurudwara Sahib premises. Please do come and help us resolve this issue.
These are my personal views, I do not intend to hurt anyone by making these comments but this whole incident hurt me so much that I felt it’s my responsibility to share my experience and thoughts with you all.
Guru Fateh !.
